Thing 7: More Fun With Photos & Images

(Click on image to see larger size)

Like many web 2.0 sites, Flickr has encouraged other people to build their own online applications using images found on the site. Through the use of APIs (application programming interfaces), many people have created third party tools and "mashups" that use Flickr images.

Mashups are hybrid web applications that take features from one application (like Flickr) and mash it up with another (like a mapping program). With this combination, for example, you get Mappr. which allows you to take Flickr images and paste them on a map.
Click here to get a more detailed explanation of mashups from Wikipedia.

New mashups come out, literally, every day. Here are some fun ones that work with Flickr:

  • Montagr – create a photo mosaic from photos found on Flickr
  • Trading Card Maker - let's you make your own trading cards (I can see the buzz now as students scramble to collect the cards of Marymount faculty and staff).
  • Big Huge Labs - create a movie poster or jigsaw puzzle of your photos from this site
Discover more mashups, web apps, and Flickr tools.

Discovery Activity:

  1. Explore some of the fun Flickr mashups and 3rd party tools that are out there.
  2. Create a blog post about one that intrigues you.

So have some fun discovering and exploring some neat little apps. And if you're up to the challenge while you’re at it, why not create a trading card of your own.

Making a trading card of my dog Bob took me about three minutes. :)

I enjoyed discovering Flickr. I am a very poor photographer but enjoy looking at the creativity of others. I can see both practical (storage, organization, sharing)and creative options through the special "effects" available. Cute effect with the trading cards.

Flickr can also be a great tool in the classroom for exploring locations, or subjects, visually. It is also becoming more common for potential students, faculty & staff, to see if an institution has photos uploaded online in order to get a better sense of the environment. For example, our new Instruction Librarian looked for Marymount photos on Flickr during her application process, but at this time there is very little content for our college on Flickr. However, here is Marymount Library's photo stream where we uploaded pictures from our One Campus One Book event in the Fall.
