Thing 2: Successful Habits of Lifelong Learners

Educators agree that lifelong learning is not only important for their own professional development, but can also offer valuable personal rewards as well. So before we embark on our Learning 2.0 journey we should take a moment to review some of the habits that create successful lifelong learners.

These habits, which are referred to as the Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners, can assist us as we make our way through the many exercises ahead, as well as giving us a strong background for our future personal and professional development.

DISCOVERY ACTIVITY:

For this item, listen to this 7 1/2 Habits Online Tutorial, created by Helene Bowers. As you watch and listen, write down which habit among the 7 & 1/2 that is easiest for you and which is hardest. You will use your personal blog (which you will create next) to post your thoughts about lifelong learning.

  • Habit 1 – Begin with the end in mind
  • Habit 2 – Accept responsibility for your own learning
  • Habit 3 – View problems as challenges
  • Habit 4 – Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner
  • Habit 5 – Create your own learning toolbox
  • Habit 6 – Use technology to your advantage
  • Habit 7 – Teach and mentor others
  • Habit 7 ½ – PLAY!

well the old ADD mind was a bit impatient with the mix of audio, powerpoint text and visuals and the real text on the side--i used the speed up button on the bottom to zip through this and skim read the text on the left--i've never been a fan of these kinds of basic educational common sense stuff---am myself always looking for the edge and the art, but that doesn't mean that the mainstream mind doesn't like readers digest condensed books for living tips versions of stuff---not wanting to be a naysayer, or a grouser, because the 7 and half traits looked pretty good for students--i just think that educational online multi media stuff has to be faster than this or edgier or it starts to look like those sound film strips from the 60s that teachers used to show when they couldn't lecture or talk to real people

I must agree that this media clip is a bit too long and boring. However I thought it was important to add a link to where I obtained the 7 habits for lifelong learning so that you could see it in context. Fortunately, there is a tremendous amount of media out there for us to choose from. Some has low production value, while other videos are much more professional and entertaining.
