Welcome to MCPV Learning 2.0 Spring 2009

Join in the Learning 2.0 Fun!

March 2nd - May 8th

The Marymount College Library and Academic Affairs would like to extend an invitation to our faculty and staff to join in this fun and interactive professional development program for learning all about Web 2.0, or social software, technologies that have become popular in the past few years.

Over a ten week period, you will have the opportunity to spend some time looking at and working with a wide variety of new and interesting Internet tools and programs, explore how they are being used by students and other professionals in the field, and share your thoughts along the way. Once you've completed the program, you will even get a great reward your efforts!

To get a better idea of what's in store, take a look at some of our participant's blogs from last year linked on the right side of the screen. For those past participant's who did not have the time to complete the program...now is your chance to capture that glory!

First of all - what is Learning 2.0 about?

Well, in the last few years, the Internet has seen incredible growth in the use of something called "social software." These are programs that allow you to easily collaborate online, build connections, and share information with others with similar interests. There are a variety of terms used to describe this phenomenon, but Web 2.0 has become the standard label and commonly refers to the way in which the Internet has become much more participatory with lines being blurred between producers and consumers of online content. In the past, most people utilized the Internet to receive information (Web 1.0), but now much of the information on the web is being created by the average person. Some of the earliest examples of this idea include the user-generated reviews on Amazon.com and TripAdvisor as well as the open marketplaces of eBay and Craigslist.

Now, there are literally thousands of social software programs out there, and more are being developed all the time. Sorting through them all and figuring out which ones are useful can be extremely time consuming, however, these technologies are increasing in use with, and for, student populations at colleges and universities around the world. You have probably overheard discussions of some of these such as My Space, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. We'll learn all about these as part of this program, but there are so many other great tools out there that can help professionals in their work, both internally and in their relationships with others in the academic community.

And that's where the MCPV Learning 2.0 Program comes in!

Marymount faculty and staff are encouraged to join in a collaborative exploration of Web 2.0 tools in a "sandbox" style setting and along the way complete "23 Things" as a way to actively learn how they are being used by students, as well as colleges and other organizations. We will be learning by doing! In addition to working through this self-paced online course, you will also have the opportunity to receive hands-on assistance at a weekly workshop. Check out more on how this program works by reading through the FAQ page.

As an added incentive, participants will be eligible to receive prizes for completing all of the 23 tasks, which includes being entered into a raffle for a chance to win a new iPod Shuffle.

Registration begins this Monday, March 2nd.

Simply send an email to Mary McMillan expressing your interest in participating in the MCPV Learning 2.0 program.

Program Kick Off: Tuesday, March 3rd at C-Hour in C203!

If you would like to learn more about this program prior to starting on the "23 Things," please join in a kick-off meeting for an introduction and to have your questions answered.
